A Legacy of Excellence...

A concise record of key moments and turning points that shaped the college.

1942

A School Born from a National Need

In 1942 the country was ruled by the English, and English was used as the medium of governance. During this period, the bombardment of Japanese in Sri Lanka sent people living in the town back to the villages, which led to branches of high schools being established in the suburbs.

1942

The Founding Vision

Eminent people of Nittambuwa and surrounding areas met Sir S.W.R.D. Bandaranayeke and held a discussion. As a result, Sanghabodhi was started as an English Buddhist school. Attanagalla was well known in Sri Lanka due to King Sri Sanghabodhi, and the school was named in homage to King Srisanghabo. The school was maintained by social workers and donors through the Sanghabodhi Sabhawa.

Early years

A Place to Build

The first school was opened near Thihariya on land of Sir Salmon West Rijve Dias Bandaranayeke Mahamudali, but it was less populated and could not be maintained. Later the Sanghabodhi Sabhawa obtained land on lease from A.W.G. Seneviratne in a more populated area closer to the Nittambuwa junction on the way to Attanagalla - Miriswatta.

Leadership

Guidance and Community Support

The first principal was Professor D.S. Kalugampitiya. Until the school was registered, construction, equipment, and teacher salaries were supported by donors. When laying the foundation, Rs.1000 was donated by S.W.R.D. Bandaranayeke, and Rs.2000 from the Yakadawala colony development fund was donated by Mr. J. Aric Perera Mudaliyar.

1959+

Government Takeover and Expansion

After the untimely death of Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayeke in 1959, Mrs. Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranayeke was appointed to leadership roles for the Sanghabodhi Sabhawa. When she became Prime Minister, she brought the takeover of private schools to parliament - and Sanghabodhi became the first school to be taken over by the government. To expand the school, land was donated and additional buildings were constructed. The Silver Jubilee was celebrated on a grand scale and an equipped laboratory worth Rs.50,000 was donated by the Minister of Education I.M.R.A. Ieriagolla.

1961-1962

Student Leadership and Activities

A student cadet corps was formed in 1961, and a Girl Guide team was started in 1962. A parents teachers association was inaugurated in 1962. Houses such as Ruhunu, Maya, Pihiti, and Malaya supported the school sports meet and a growing culture of extracurricular achievement.
